Suspects charged with killing Chicago cop

CHICAGO, May 22 (UPI) -- Two men suspected of killing an off-duty Chicago police officer while trying to steal his motorcycle have been charged with first-degree murder.

Paris McGee, 20, and Toyious Taylor, 29, both of Chicago, were charged Friday night, the Chicago Tribune reported. A third man who was wounded remains hospitalized in critical condition, while a fourth was killed in a shootout with Officer Thomas Wortham IV.

Investigators say the group approached Wortham, 30, outside his parents' home late Wednesday and tried to grab his new motorcycle, a present to himself after completing his second tour in Iraq with the Wisconsin National Guard. Both the police officer and his father, a retired police sergeant, fired at the thieves.

At a news conference Friday, Police Superintendent Jody Weis said information from the public helped lead to speedy arrests.

"There's some cases that will break any code of silence," Weis said. "I think the community wanted to solve this case."

McGee surrendered to police, while Taylor was arrested during a traffic stop. Police have not released the name of the hospitalized man but say he is a cousin of the dead man, Brian Floyd, 20.
