DETROIT, May 11 (UPI) -- A man who allegedly killed a Detroit police officer responding to a burglary and wounded four others was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder.

Jason Gibson, 25, faces a total of 18 felony counts, the Detroit Free Press reported. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said they include four counts of assault with intent to murder.

Officer Brian Huff was gunned down May 3. He and the other officers were investigating a report of a break-in at an empty house.

"For those of us in law enforcement, there is no greater tragedy than to lose an officer in the line of duty," Worthy said at a news conference to announce the charges.

Worthy said that if Gibson is convicted of first-degree murder he faces mandatory life without parole, The Detroit News reported.

Gibson, who was shot in the back, was to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon at St. John Hospital & Medical Center.

Police said that Huff had just entered the house when he was gunned down. Gibson allegedly ran outside and began firing at the other officers.
