Victim's mother wants answer from killer

SAN DIEGO, April 26 (UPI) -- The mother of Amber Dubois says she doesn't want an apology from San Diego County killer John Gardner but wants to know how he abducted and killed the girl.

Gardner kidnapped Carrie McGonigle's 14-year-old daughter Amber Feb. 13, 2009, as she walked to school along an Escondido, Calif., street and killed and buried her the same day. McGonigle says she wants to know how he did it so law enforcement and the rest of the community can protect other children, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

"I would definitely want to talk to him," McGonigle said. "I want to know, as her mom, but I think the community and law enforcement also has to know, how did this guy get Amber? How do we protect our kids from someone like him?"

On April 16, Gardner pleaded guilty to the Feb. 13 rape and murder of Amber Dubois. He also pleaded guilty to killing Chelsea King of Poway as she went for a Feb. 25 run in Rancho Bernardo Community Park.

He pleaded guilty to escape the death penalty, the newspaper said.

Gardner will be sentenced for killing Dubois and King June 1.
