Judge: Ex-Detroit mayor violated parole

DETROIT, April 20 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was found guilty of violating his parole, a Wayne County judge declared Tuesday.

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner scheduled Kilpatrick's sentencing for May 25, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Kilpatrick displayed no reaction when Groner ruled the disgraced city leader could be sentenced to prison for violating his probation by failing to disclose money that could have been used to pay $1 million in court-ordered restitution. Kilpatrick resigned as mayor and served a short stint in jail after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and assault on a sheriff's deputy.

When Groner said a prison sentence was possible, someone in the gallery shouted "amen" before being escorted out by sheriff's deputies.

Groner agreed Kilpatrick could be free on bond until he is sentenced.

"You would be well advised to have your affairs in order before sentencing," Groner said.

Assistant Prosecutor Athina Siringas pressed Groner to sentence Kilpatrick Tuesday instead May 25, but the judge said a pre-sentence report was required by law, adding, "I don't know everything about the defendant ... and I think it's important for the court to know everything it can," the Free Press said.
