MOSCOW, March 22 (UPI) -- Russia is second only to the United States in the production of Internet child pornography, a Russian children's rights advocate says.
"We need to combat the wave of crime that is polluting our cyberspace on the Internet today," Russian ombudsman for children's rights Pavel Astakhov said, RIA Novosti reported Monday. "We need to use advanced technology and international cooperation."
Astakhov is urging the Russian government to connect with other countries to set up a workable plan to halt the spread of pornographic material on the Internet.
He noted the lag between the criminal behavior and the ability to catch pornographers.
"Unfortunately we are lagging behind the criminals who are constantly devising new ways of doing things. Modern Internet technology allows you to change the web address you send such material from every 15 minutes," Astakhov said.
The Internet Watch Foundation -- which is based in Britain and combats online child sexual abuse content -- notes the United States and Russia host the majority of the world's child abuse Web sites, RIA Novosti said.
