PORT ANGELES, Wash., March 11 (UPI) -- A resident of Port Angeles, Wash., will serve three months in jail for leaving his 11-year-old son alone before a dog attack, a judge says.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge S. Brooke Taylor sentenced Matthew B. Sims, 38, on charges related to the Feb. 3 animal attack on Sims's son and Sims's alleged theft of a motorcycle that same day, the Peninsula Daily News of Port Angeles, Wash., reported Thursday.
Clallam County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ann Lundwall said Sims's plea did not include an admission of guilt over the dog attack and possession of a stolen vehicle charges. Sims basically conceded a jury would convict him, Lundwall added.
Police allege last month's dog attack on Sims's son, James, occurred after Sims left the child alone so he could steal a motorcycle.
Sims's dog, a 50-pound Labrador retriever mix, attacked the boy as the child walked past the animal, police said. The boy suffered bites to his arms, face and hands during the attack.
The Daily News said Sims's sentences of three months on a dangerous dog charge and one month on a stolen vehicle charge will run concurrently.
