ESCONDIDO, Calif., March 9 (UPI) -- A sex offender charged in the death of 17-year-old Chelsea King also is a suspect in the death of 14-year-old Amber Dubois, police in Escondido, Calif., said.
John Albert Gardner III, 30, is charged with murder in the death of King, who disappeared Feb. 25 while running near Lake Hodges, just south of Escondido. Her body was found March 2 in a shallow grave near a tributary of Lake Hodges.
Dubois's remains were discovered by police Saturday in rugged terrain in northern San Diego County. Dubois disappeared in February 2009 on her way to Escondido High School.
Gardner has not cooperated with the investigations and police have not publicly said why they consider him a suspect in the 14-year-old girl's death, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
Monday night, hundreds of students and Escondido residents gathered at a candlelight vigil to remember Dubois.
