WESTMORELAND, N.H., March 8 (UPI) -- Mary Josephine Ray, recognized as the second-oldest living person in the world, died at the age of 114 in Westmoreland, N.H., her daughter-in-law says.
Barbara Ray said her mother-in-law died of unspecified causes early Sunday at the Maplewood County Nursing Home, ending a life officially honored by the Gerontology Research Group for its longevity, the Manchester Union-Leader said Monday.
"She loved all the attention," Barbara Ray said.
Ray was born on May 17, 1895, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, but later relocated to the United States, living in Maine for nearly six decades.
"She had been with us so long," Barbara Ray said of her mother-in-law. "I always said God knows best, and he would know when to take her. I think everything just gave out."
The Union-Leader said the oldest living person in the world is recognized as Kama Chinen of Japan, who was born a week before Ray.
In addition to her daughter-in-law, Ray is survived by a son and a granddaughter.
