LOS ANGELES, March 3 (UPI) -- Los Angeles police officials say they have removed the bloody shirt worn by Robert Kennedy the night he was killed from an exhibit of department artifacts.
The LAPD also extended its apologies to the family of the late senator who was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel during a 1968 presidential campaign appearance.
"The last thing we want to do is traumatize a victim's family and I am very sensitive to that," said Police Chief Charlie Beck. "But at the same time, we want to preserve the history of the city of Los Angeles and improve the quality and understanding about our homicide investigations."
The shirt was among the items from various high-profile LAPD murder cases put on display at a Las Vegas casino where the California Homicide Investigators Association Conference was being held this week. The display at the Palms is open to the public.
The Los Angeles Times said Wednesday that other items from the LAPD archives in the exhibit included evidence from the Charles Manson murders, the O.J. Simpson case, the Patty Hearst kidnapping and the 1997 robbery and epic shootout at a bank in North Hollywood.
