CHICAGO, March 2 (UPI) -- A Chicago couple found dead in their South Side apartment appear to have inflicted fatal stab wounds on each other, police said Tuesday.
Officer Laura Kubiak, a spokeswoman for the police department, said the deaths of Mario and Krystal Zavala could also have been a case of murder-suicide, the Chicago Tribune reported. Investigators do not believe a third person was responsible for either killing since there were no signs someone had broken into the apartment, Kubiak said.
"We think it's a case of mutual combatants," she said.
Mario Zavala, 46, and Krystal Zavala, 22, had recently resumed a "volatile relationship," Kubiak said.
Mario Zavala was convicted of homicide in 1987 and served 20 years of a 33-year sentence, Kubiak said. His wife had been charged with theft.
