PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- State and federal agents searching a Philadelphia doctor's office found 30 frozen fetuses, CBS3, Philadelphia, reported Monday.
State drug agents, along with FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration agents, carried out a search Thursday, acting on a tip the doctor was performing late-term abortions, FBI spokesman J.J. Klaver said. Klaver would not provide details on the investigation or confirm reports the target of the search was Dr. Kermit B. Gosnell, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Citing law-enforcement sources, the newspaper said agents who conducted the search had been investigating Gosnell on suspicion of alleged distribution of prescription painkillers. Evidence discovered in the Thursday search prompted federal agents to contact state authorities with jurisdiction over Pennsylvania abortion law.
CBS3 said state officials discovered the frozen fetuses in a follow-up search.
Authorities began investigating the matter after a woman died Nov. 20 during an abortion, CBS3 said. Sources told the TV station the woman had high levels of a painkiller in her body.
The Inquirer said its attempts to contact Gosnell for comment were not successful. State medical board officials said Gosnell's license to practice medicine has been suspended but it was not clear when the suspension became effective.
The fetuses were being analyzed to try to determine whether late-term abortions had been performed.
