Sanford struck 'faithful' from vows

CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Jenny Sanford says she married South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford despite his refusal to promise fidelity.

"It bothered me to some extent, but ... we were very young, we were in love. I questioned it, but I got past it ... along with other doubts that I had," the first lady told ABC News Tuesday.

In January 2009 the Sanford's marriage came into public view after the governor was discovered carrying on an affair with an Argentinean mistress. Jenny Sanford, an alumna of Georgetown University and a former investment banker, was devastated but wanted to reconcile, she said.

"I told him immediately that I wanted to reconcile, that I would forgive him, but that it had to be over, and the marriage had to be much better. I wasn't going to go back to more of the same," she said.

Gov. Sanford then asked his wife a question which revealed, what she called, a "string of twisted logic."

"He said, 'Why, why can't you just give me permission?' I said, 'Well, why would I give you permission? I mean, who, who gives their spouse permission to go see their lover?'"
