Killer thief tosses Faberge egg

NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A robber who gunned down a New York jewelry store employee and stole $1 million worth of gems threw a Faberge egg in the trash, police said.

The gunman got away with about 700 pieces of jewelry valued at around $1 million, the New York Post reported. The robbery occurred Wednesday at R.S. Durant Jewelers on Madison Avenue at 75th Street.

A worker at the store said the man came into the store and demanded that he and co-worker Henry Menahem fill two canvas bags. When both refused, the robber showed them a semi-automatic handgun and said "Do you think I'm kidding? This is real."

The man then shot Menahem, a 71-year-old grandfather, in the chest. He refused to allow the other employee to call an ambulance.

A police officer found the jeweled Faberge egg, valued at around $1,000, in a nearby trashcan.

Menahem was buried Friday after a service at a funeral home in Ocean Township, N.J., the New York Daily News said. He was remembered as a fighter who was told several years ago he would be dead from cancer within months.

"Although he always liked to portray himself as a tough guy, he really had a kind, boy-scouted heart," his son-in-law, Ralph Mosery, said.
