Novack slay letter sparks police interest

RYE BROOK, N.Y., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Police in Rye Brook, N.Y., say they want to contact the writer of an anonymous letter they received about the slaying of a Florida businessman.

Ben Novack Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., son of the founder of the Fontainebleau Hotel, was discovered dead in his Rye Brook hotel room July 12 by his wife Narcy, whom police have described as a suspect in the crime.

Rye Brook Police Chief Gregory Austin told Tuesday's Miami Herald investigators were looking for the author of an anonymous letter sent shortly after the slaying that was originally dismissed as a crank but which has gained more credibility as the investigation of Novack's killing has progressed.

The letter, written in Spanish, claims Novack's slaying was "the perfect crime" and contends the death of the businessman's mother Bernice Novack three months earlier was not accidental as had been ruled but also part of a murder plot, the Herald said.

"What we found interesting in the letter is there were names in it at the time we were not aware of, and as we did our own investigation, we found that information to be true," Austin told the newspaper.
