Killer of five awaits sentencing

MIAMI, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A Miami jury is hearing testimony on whether Tavares Calloway should be executed or sentenced to life in prison for killing five men, officials said.

"The sentencing phase is like a mini-trial," defense lawyer Sydney Smith said. "We expect there will be a decision on what will happen to him by next week."

Calloway, 31, was convicted in July of five counts of first-degree murder for the January 1997 killings in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood.

Calloway was convicted in Miami-Dade Circuit Court of shooting the victims in the head after he and Antonio Clark broke into an apartment seeking drugs and money, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday. Four of the victims were drug dealers. The fifth victim was a nephew of one of the drug dealers.

Clark was convicted in the killings and sentenced to life in prison after implicating Calloway.
