CHICAGO, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A fire official in Wonder Lake, Ill., said a pet cat was able to save the lives of a man and a pregnant woman during a house fire early Monday morning.
Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Mike Weber told the Chicago Sun-Times as the house fire began filling the home's living room with smoke, the feline was able to wake the man who had been sleeping on a couch with the woman.
"The cat started bugging him and when he woke up he noticed that the living room was filling with smoke,'' Weber said.
Weber said after unsuccessfully trying to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, the man fled the home with the woman, the cat and their pet dog.
"They were lucky,'' the fire official added.
Weber said the woman, who is expecting twins, and the man were on the couch because the woman was uncomfortable. The victims' identities were not released.
The fire apparently began in the couple's bedroom and was able to be contained to a nearby hallway by firefighters, the Sun-Times said. The fire is under investigation.
