UC Berkeley fraternities to face lawsuit

BERKELEY, Calif., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A man in Berkeley, Calif., says he intends to file suit against 35 fraternities at the University of California, Berkeley, for alleged unruly behavior.

The Oakland (Calif.) Tribune said Sunday that Paul Ghysels is eyeing a lawsuit with the South of Campus Neighborhood Association that would target local fraternities over alleged incidents involving violent assaults, public urination and underage drinking.

Attorney Louis Garcia, who is representing Ghysles, said the lawsuit will attempt to force the targeted UC Berkeley fraternity houses to install a live-in adult supervisor to monitor members' behaviors.

Garcia said the planned Alameda County Superior Court lawsuit would also seek a temporary restraining order aimed at limiting members' alleged "offensive" behaviors.

"You have these parties and all this harmful, offensive behavior, the noise, homes broken into, windows smashed, beer bottles thrown at our clients," Garcia alleges.

The Tribune said Berkeley City Councilmember Kriss Worthington questioned the litigation plan of targeting all fraternities for the alleged actions of a few.

"To just treat all fraternities as if they are equally good or equally bad seems like a dangerous concept," Worthington said
