No charges for youngest in burning attack

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The deadline has passed for charging a 13-year-old Florida boy in the attack on Michael Brewer who was doused with alcohol and set on fire, a prosecutor said.

Maria Schneider said the Broward County state's attorney's office has declined to file charges against Jeremy Jarvis, the youngest boy arrested after the October incident, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

"There wasn't sufficient evidence to base charges on," Schneider said.

Of the five youths who were arrested, three have been charged by prosecutors.

Brewer spent more than two months in the hospital recovering from burns over two-thirds of his body.

The Broward County sheriff's office is stepping up patrols in Brewer's neighborhood to guard against harassment of his family, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

Police have been called to the Brewer home in recent days over a burglary attempt and vandalism.
