NEW YORK, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Relatives of a 12-year-old New York boy said Sunday he is fighting for his life after being repeatedly stabbed and left for dead.
The New York Daily News said Sunday that Luis Martinez suffered stab wounds to his face, neck and torso during Saturday night's attack. The young boy was found on the Jackie Robinson Parkway by police after the attack.
Martinez's sister, Angie Ortiz, said her brother's lung and one of his kidneys were punctured, adding he will need reconstructive surgery to repair wounds to his face.
"He's going to be in there a while. We're hoping he'll make it through, but it's serious. He's critical," she said.
One of Martinez's cousins voiced suspicions the boy may have been attacked by gang members.
"The marks that he had are signs of gang initiation," said the cousin, identified only as Monica.
Unidentified sources told the New York Post that Martinez knew his attacker. To date, no arrests have been made in the case.
