Giuliani backs military trial for suspect

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Friday suspected terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab should be tried in a military court.

Appearing on "Good Morning America," Giuliani said the government could obtain more information from the individual accused of attempting to blow up Northwest Flight 253 to Detroit if he were tried in a military court instead of civil court, ABC News said.

"It seems to me we're going to be trying the most dangerous terrorists in the wrong place," Giuliani said.

Abdulmutallab, 23, is accused of attempting to detonate explosives hidden inside his underwear while aboard the Christmas Day flight. He was expected to appear in federal court in Detroit Friday.

Giuliani said most terror suspects only provide a mix of truth and lies during the first 30 hours they are questioned and a military trial would give investigators additional time to obtain more information.

"It takes them a lot longer than 30 hours to debrief a terrorist with the kind of history that he appears to have ... Why would you stop it?" the former mayor asked.
