Jersey gay marriage bill up for vote

TRENTON, N.J., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The president of the New Jersey State Senate has scheduled a Thursday vote on a bill that would legalize homosexual marriages in the Garden State.

Sen. Richard Codey said Tuesday that the "intensely personal nature" of the proposal rated a full and open debate on the Senate floor.

The (Newark) New Jersey Star-Ledger said Wednesday that the short deadline and widespread uncertainty over the level of Senate support for the bill means lobbyists will be feverishly pitching their case this week.

Some senators predicted the measure would fail, while others told the Star-Ledger that supporters had laid out a strong case based on civil rights.

The bill has the support of Gov. Jon Corzine but faces an uncertain future in the Assembly if it is passed by the Senate, the newspaper said.
