Woman ordered to give up Crockett document

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A Florida woman says she inherited the original of Davy Crockett's marriage license application and does not want to give it to a Tennessee county.

Tennessee officials want a court in Hillsborough County, Tenn., to enforce a November order for Margaret V. Smith, 90, of Tampa to hand over the document completed by the American frontiersman who died defending the Alamo against the Mexicans, the Tampa Tribune reported Tuesday.

Smith said her uncle took the document when someone who was cleaning out the courthouse in Dandridge, Tenn., thought it was unimportant and was going to throw it away.

"And my uncle, my Dad's elder brother, saw it, and being a fan of Crockett, he grabbed it right quick. And it's been in the family ever since," the order quoted Smith as saying.

In 2005, Smith had taken the 1805 application on the television program, "Antiques Roadshow," where its value was appraised at $25,000 to $50,000, the Tribune reported.

"The circumstantial evidence is a member of Mrs. Smith's family took that document. It's Jefferson County's document. The title is in Jefferson County, period. She's got to return it," Judge Allen Wallace said.
