ALBUQUERQUE, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A couple in Albuquerque is facing child abuse charges for allegedly causing 20 factures and other injuries to their 3-month-old daughter, police say.
A police report said the infant daughter of Jacob Nichols, 20, and Ashley Gibson, 19, was repeatedly spanked, punched and dropped before being hospitalized with more than 20 fractures and other injuries, the Albuquerque Journal said Monday.
Police allege Gibson informed investigators Nichols punched their infant daughter at least 10 times prior to the hospital visit.
According to criminal complaints in the case, Nichols allegedly admitted to police he would repeatedly drop the baby from heights up to 18 inches to stop her from crying or sometimes for his own "entertainment."
The infant's hospitalization comes weeks after New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department officials allowed the child to remain with the couple after investigating allegations of abuse in December.
The couple contacted 911 early Saturday morning after the baby was struggling to breathe. A CYFD official told the Journal the infant is in critical condition and is suffering from bleeding in the brain.
