Lawyer wants texts in burning attack case

MIAMI, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The lawyer for the Florida teens accused in the alcohol-fueled fire attack on Michael Brewer says he wants to see text messages possibly sent by a witness.

Assistant Public Defender Gordon Weekes represents Matthew Bent, 15, who allegedly gave the order to douse Brewer with rubbing alcohol before setting him on fire. Denver Jarvis, 15, allegedly threw the alcohol and Jesus Mendez, 16, allegedly lit the blaze, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Weekes wants a record of the text messages sent the day of and the day after the attack by Mendez's younger brother, who Weekes alleges was texting when he was with investigators, the Herald said.

"When kids text, they text about all kinds of things. We want to see what was in those texts," Weekes said.

Broward Circuit Judge Dale Cohen also approved Weekes' request to obtain two diagrams drawn by Mendez's younger brother outlining where the accused were standing during the attack, the Herald reported.
