WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Senate Republicans worked to delay the Democrats' bid to move along the healthcare debate Wednesday, including trying to get a 767-page amendment read.
The effort was thwarted when Sen. Bernie Sanders, Ind-Vt., pulled the amendment from the floor, MSNBC.com reported.
Senate aides had estimated it could take 8 to 10 hours to read Sanders' amendment on a single-payer healthcare system, The Hill reported Wednesday.
Senate Republican leaders have been under pressure from conservatives to slow down movement on the healthcare reform bill.
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., objected to a request to dispense with the reading of the amendment on a single-payer healthcare system, a courtesy nearly always granted, the Washington publication reported.
