Suspect in intern's death denies threats

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The suspect in the 2001 slaying of Washington government intern Chandra Levy pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he threatened a witness.

Ingmar Guandique entered his plea in District of Columbia Superior Court through his attorney, NewsChannel 8 reported.

A grand jury this month indicted Guandique on obstruction of justice and other charges. Authorities allege he conveyed threats against a witness while in jail, the Washington-area cable channel said.

Guandique, 27, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who had been working as a day laborer, previously pleaded innocent to first-degree murder. He is accused of killing Levy, 24, who had completed an internship for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons in Washington at the time of her death. Her body was found a year later in a park.

Guandique is serving a 10-year sentence for separate assaults in the same park.
