WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., was resting comfortably in a Washington hospital after suffering abdominal pain traced to a gallbladder issue, his office said.

His illness forced the cancellation of an Appropriations Committee subcommittee hearing with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on security in Afghanistan, CNN reported Tuesday. Murtha is chairman of the Appropriation panel's Subcommittee on Defense.

"He's currently resting and doing well," spokesman Matt Mazonkey said of Murtha, who was hospitalized Sunday.
