Reed is new Atlanta mayor after recount

ATLANTA, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Kasim Reed is Atlanta's new mayor, having survived a tight runoff and a recount that made him the winner by a scant 714 votes, election officials said.

Mary Norwood, who edged past Reed in the general election, officially conceded Wednesday after the recount figures were posted, completing one of the tightest races in Atlanta history.

Fulton County officials said Reed, a former Georgia state legislator, won with 42,549 votes while Norwood had 41,835, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The new mayor-elect called Norwood a "sincere, earnest and compassionate public official" and said the two would meet soon to discuss a role in his administration.

Reed has been busy since he was initially certified as the mayor Saturday, having named both an interim police chief and a new chief operating officer while awaiting the recount.

Norwood called for the recount because she was within 0.84 percent of Reed.
