WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Conrad Burns, who represented Montana in the U.S. Senate for 18 years, was hospitalized in intensive care in Washington Thursday for a stroke, his family said.

Burns, who served from 1989 to 2007, was first taken to Virginia Hospital Center and then transferred to a Washington hospital, the statement said.

"The encouragement and support we've received are a tremendous comfort to my dad and the rest of his family," Burns's son Garrett said in the statement. "Right now, we're focused on getting dad healthy."
