LANSING, Mich., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- All that's required now for Michigan's new smoking ban to become law is Gov. Jennifer Granholm's signature.
The Michigan House voted 75-30 Thursday to send her the measure outlawing smoking in bars, restaurants and the bulk of all other workplaces, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday. The state Senate had voted 24-13 earlier in the day.
Granholm says she will sign the bill into law, Michigan Public Radio reported.
The exceptions to the ban include the three casinos in Detroit, where smoking will be allowed on the gaming floors but not in their bars and restaurants, and in casinos on Indian tribal lands where smoking is allowed, the Free Press said. Also excepted will be cigar bars and tobacco shops, home offices and inside the cabs of freight trucks, Michigan Public Radio said.
The ban would take effect May 1. Thirty-seven other states already have some sort of smoking ban in place.
