Man convicted of sexually abusing girls

EDINBURG, Texas, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A jury in Hidalgo County, Texas, convicted a 57-year-old man of repeatedly sexually abusing two sisters, ages 9 and 10.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday Andres Enrique Cantu was convicted on two counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child Wednesday after a two-day trial.

The abuse of the sisters when they were 9 and 10 came to light after the younger girl wrote a letter to Santa Claus Dec. 8, 2008, as part of a class assignment. The girl asked in the letter for a relative to stop inappropriately touching her and her sister.

The letter prompted an investigation by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Signs of sexual abuse were discovered during physical examinations of the two girls.

Cantu, who was married to the girls' mother, maintained during his trial he was innocent and never shared a bed with the young girls.

"I would never even think about doing something like that," he insisted Wednesday.

The Express-News said Cantu is to be sentenced Dec. 28. He is facing two prison terms of 25 years to life.
