Sanford's wife greets holiday visitors

COLUMBIA, S.C., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The wife of embattled South Carolina chief executive Mark Sanford was on hand for the official opening of the governor's mansion to holiday visitors.

It was first lady Jenny Sanford's first public appearance in the capital city since her husband admitted having an affair with a woman from Argentina, The State reported Friday.

Jenny Sanford greeted a steady stream of South Carolinians who came to see how the mansion was decorated for the holidays.

Thursday's open house provided an opportunity for several women to show support for the first lady, who is separated from her husband and living on Sullivan's Island with their four children.

Sanford has a book scheduled for release in April that is being billed as an "inspirational memoir."

She will be appearing next Wednesday on Barbara Walters' "The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009."
