Trucks overturn due to sleeping drivers

CHELSEA, Mich., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Two semi-trailer trucks overturned in separate crashes on Interstate 94 in Michigan early Thursday when the drivers fell asleep at the wheel, state police said.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Chris Pascoe said one rig traveling eastbound overturned in Washtenaw County. The Detroit Free Press reported that accident was followed soon after by another truck overturning while westbound a short distance away.

Pascoe said the accidents caused significant delays and additional delays were expected throughout the day.

"It's a mess," he said. "It's just a very weird coincidence that they rolled over nearly in the same spot -- one eastbound, one westbound.

"It's flat and straight and people like to fall asleep out there."

No other vehicles were involved and neither of the unidentified truck drivers was injured, Pascoe said.
