College eyeing same-sex homecoming couples

DENTON, Texas, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- University of North Texas students will decide whether same-sex couples can be contestants for homecoming king and queen, a student official says.

Dakota Carter, president of the college's Student Government Association, said the association voted 22-1 in favor of a measure calling for a referendum on the same-sex issue, The Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

While this year's homecoming king and queen were already crowned at the school in Denton, Texas, the results of the Nov. 16 through Nov. 20 online vote could impact 2010 homecoming contests.

The proposal to allow same-sex couples to take part in the homecoming royalty contests was initially rejected by the college's student senate.

A series of student protests eventually prompted student Senate members to reverse their decision and pave the way for the upcoming student vote, Carter said.

I'm just glad that the Senate was able to reconsider the issue and let the students decide," Carter told the Morning News. "We showed we are willing to listen."
