OAKLAND PARK, Fla., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A Florida multimillionaire who pleaded no contest to drug charges may file a complaint alleging mistreatment while in police custody, his lawyer said.
Guma Aguiar, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the primary sponsor of an Israeli soccer team, said Broward County Sheriff's police mistreated him when they pulled his car over and arrested him for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Monday.
Aguiar, 32, said sheriff's deputies punched him and broke his fingers, and made anti-Semitic remarks, when they stopped him June 19 in Oakland Park. Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Leljedal told Israeli media the accusation was ludicrous, and he told the Sun-Sentinel that coverage prompted a complaint by Aguiar.
"He tried to intimidate me and said that he had money, he would fight and he would embarrass us," Leljedal said.
Michael Dutko, Aguiar's lawyer, said he was uncertain whether Aguiar still planned to file a complaint against the sheriff's office for alleged abuse while in custody. Under the plea deal, Aguiar paid $536 in court costs and both charges will be expunged from his record, the Sun-Sentinel said.
