Soldier's girlfriend charged in attack

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The 27-year-old girlfriend of a Fort Eustis soldier helped him flee the Newport News, Va., post after he attacked a fellow soldier, authorities allege.

The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported Thursday Patsy Ann Marie Montowski of Virginia Beach is facing a federal charge of being an accessory after the fact in the March 8 attack that left Spc. Mitchell Stone seriously injured.

Spc. Christopher Lanum, Montowski's 25-year-old boyfriend, shocked Stone with a stun gun and slashed his throat with a knife when their argument in a Fort Eustis barracks escalated.

The Virginian-Pilot said court documents indicate Lanum and Montowski fled the Army post in a minivan following the attack. Lanum later died in Shenandoah National Park during a standoff with police.

If convicted, Montowski could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Stone's current condition was not reported.
