Police shoot man who killed neighbor

NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- New York police say they fatally shot a 21-year-old man who stabbed a neighbor to death before injuring another man and taunting police officers.

The New York Daily News said Thursday that, according to police, Carlton Lewis fatally stabbed Marco Betancourt with a dagger Wednesday and then turned the weapon on his mother's boyfriend, Charles Davis.

Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said responding officers found Davis, 50, suffering from three stab wounds. Davis' condition as of Thursday was not reported.

Browne said Lewis failed to respond to a lead officer's demands he drop the deadly weapon as he approached the officers, prompting the lead officer to shoot him four times, the Daily News reported.

"He keeps coming. He is closing the distance between the lead officer and himself, coming at the officers with the dagger," Browne said.

Unidentified sources told the New York Post that Betancourt was fatally stabbed while attempting to help Davis deal with Lewis. No motive was given for the attacks.
