ICRC staff member killed in CAR

BANGUI, Central African Republic, March 10 (UPI) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was outraged by the slaying of one of its staff members in the Central African Republic.

The ICRC said armed men stormed a Catholic mission in northern CAR housing four members of its staff. One was killed in the weekend attack, though the three others escaped without serious injury.

Georgios Georgantas, head of the ICRC delegation, said the organization was irate.

"It is utterly unacceptable," he said in a statement Saturday. "We urgently call on all those bearing arms to respect and spare people working for the ICRC or for the broader International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and indeed all those who carry out humanitarian work."

Seleka, a Sunni Muslim rebel coalition, overthrew the government in March 2013. Former President Michel Djotodia, a rebel commander, lost control of the force and the conflict took a turn for the worse when anti-balaka, a Christian militia, took up arms against its Muslim rivals.

Georgantas said last week atrocities in CAR "are continuing."

CAR is one of the poorest countries in the world and aid agencies said ongoing crises in the country has sparked a humanitarian disaster.
