CAIRO, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The level of political violence in Ukraine is unfortunate, but it's nothing compared with the level of repression in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood said Friday.
The Muslim Brotherhood said it condemned the situation in Ukraine, but was frustrated with the lack of focus on Egypt.
Mohammed Morsi, a political leader from the Muslim Brotherhood, became president in 2012 in Egypt's first ever democratic election. He was ousted by the military in July in a move the Muslim Brotherhood said was a coup.
"While the criminal brutality in Ukraine is certainly reprehensible, it is nothing compared with the coup regime's repressive crimes in Egypt," the movement said in a statement Friday.
A policy brief published by the European Union in February said it was concerned by the lack of political space in Egypt more than three years after a revolution unseated former President Hosni Mubarak. The Muslim Brotherhood said the EU fell short, however, because it didn't describe Morsi's ouster as a military coup.
Ahram Online, an Egyptian news agency, said there were minor clashes reported in the country between pro-Morsi and pro-government forces. No major injuries or deaths were reported.
