CAIRO, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The Muslim Brotherhood said a European Union conclusion on developments in Egypt overlooks the broader issues, adding the EU is burying its head in the sand.
The European Union issued a statement last week expressing concern about political developments in Egypt more than three years after a revolution unseated former President Hosni Mubarak.
Since Mubarak's resignation in 2011, Egyptians elected the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi, though he was removed from office by the Egyptian military in July.
The Brotherhood said in a statement on its English-language website the EU "overlooked the larger truth" in last week's assessment.
"Namely, that a murderous military coup d'etat was executed by the generals in Egypt, and caused all these calamities," the Brotherhood said in a statement Wednesday. "It is an evidently illegitimate coup by all constitutional, humanitarian, legal and democratic standards."
The EU in its statement said it "deplores the absence of a fully inclusive [political] process ... and the closing of political space" but welcomed a new constitution the Brotherhood said was passed in a sham referendum.
Egyptian Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met Thursday in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported it appeared, based on Putin's statement, that he endorsed Sisi as a potential future president of Egypt.
