Muslim Brotherhood praises African Union snub of Egypt

CAIRO, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- The Muslim Brotherhood said the African Union's decision not to invite Egypt to a summit was a sign of frustration with the country's military leadership.

"This is a clear message from the AU, not only that it condemns the [Egyptian] coup, but also rejects all the consequent proceedings as null and void, including the sham referendum and the illegitimate constitution," the brotherhood said on its website Sunday.

Egypt, which wasn't invited to last week's summit for the African Union in Ethiopia, was suspended by the AU in July in response to the military's decision to remove President Mohamed Morsi from office.

The majority of people taking part in a January referendum voted in favor of a proposed constitution meant to replace one drafted during Morsi's tenure. The Muslim Brotherhood boycotted the referendum.

Badr Abdel Ati, a spokesman for the Egyptian foreign minister, was quoted by Egyptian news website Ahram Online as saying Wednesday the AU decision was "wrong and short-sighted."
