BRUSSELS, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The crisis response coordinator for the European Union said Tuesday the community came forward with another $225 million in humanitarian assistance for Syria.
"I hope that other donors will demonstrate their solidarity with the innocent victims of this war," EU Commissioner for Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva said in a statement. "This is the only way to avoid an even greater deterioration in this massive humanitarian crisis."
Georgieva is scheduled to attend a donor's conference for Syria scheduled Wednesday in Kuwait. She said the $225 million in emergency funding means an estimated $1.5 billion has been committed by the EU since conflict began in March 2011.
Last week, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer said he was "deeply concerned" about the violence in Syria and the impact it had on its civilians.
The United Nations' World Health Organization says the health situation in Syria has been in a steady state of deterioration since the conflict began.
"The Syrian people continue to endure a tragic ordeal," Georgieva said.
The British government announced Monday it committed more than $820 million in humanitarian assistance for Syria.
