CAIRO, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The Egyptian government said Monday voters would be able to cast their ballots for a Jan. 14 constitutional referendum at more polling stations than ever.
Interim President Adly Mansour issued a decree expanding voter access for the referendum.
Ahram Online said the revision should make it easier for Egyptians to vote.
Voters during parliamentary elections in 2011 and presidential elections in 2012 said it was too difficult to cast ballots because they lived in areas far away from their registered polling stations.
Dozens of religious and political leaders were mandated to overhaul a 2012 constitution adopted by the administration of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
Morsi is a Muslim Brotherhood member and his government was seen as favoring Islamic principles.
Last month, members of a constitutional committee revised the final draft of a new constitution to change the phrase "civilian rule" to "civilian government."
"Civilian rule" would have prevented religious or military leaders from taking positions of authority in Egypt. The revised language makes the provision less restrictive.
