THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said Friday all of the unfilled munitions declared by Syrian have been destroyed.
The OPCW, in a statement issued through its joint mission with the United Nations, said all of the so-called Category 3, or unfilled, munitions were eliminated.
The OPCW adopted a plan in November for the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles. It said declared chemical substances and chemical weapons precursors should be out of Syria no later than Feb. 5.
Under the plan, all of Syria's chemical weapons will be transported outside the country to ensure their destruction no later than June 30.
The OPCW said it destroyed parts of buildings used to manufacture weapons in Homs that were rendered inoperable during previous missions.
The U.S. Defense Department said Thursday it offered the OPCW a "technical solution" for removing some of the remaining chemical weapons from Syria. The Pentagon said it could help destroy "hundreds of tons" of weapons material using a field-deployable system that would turn chemical weapons components into low-level hazardous waste.
Albania was considered briefly as a destination for the disposal of some of Syria's chemical weapons. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in November said his government was willing to be involved in the operation but lacked the internal capacity to participate directly.
