BEIRUT, Lebanon, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Wednesday the terrorists behind the attack on the Iranian embassy were the same who tried to kill him last year.
"Those who targeted the embassy [Tuesday] are the same team that threatened to assassinate me," he was quoted by The (Lebanon) Daily Star newspaper as saying.
Berri said he, along with Marionite Patriarch Beshara Rai Beshara Rai and Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi, were targeted for assassination by a terrorist group in May 2012.
The Lebanese newspaper reported Tuesday al-Qaida affiliated Abdullah Azzam brigade took credit for twin suicide bombings targeting the Iranian Embassy in Beirut. At least 25 people were killed and another 150 others were injured in the attacks.
The Sunni terrorist group said it would carry out further attacks inside Lebanon unless Hezbollah, a Shiite movement, pulled its fighters out of Syria. Hezbollah admitted to fighting alongside pro-government forces in Syria's civil war.
Berri is a lawmaker from the Amal Movement, a member of the March 8 coalition that includes Hezbollah leaders.
The Daily Star reported Lebanese President Michel Sulemain is on his way home from Kuwait to address the national security situation.
