TEHRAN, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- There was no political motive in the recent slayings of an Iranian prosecutor and the deputy mines minister, Iran's deputy police chief said Wednesday.
Musa Noori, a prosecutor from Zabol, a city in southeast Sistan-Baluchistan province, was shot to death by unknown gunmen last week on his way to work. Iranian Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Mines Safdar Rahmatabadi was shot to death Sunday in Tehran.
Iranian Deputy Police Chief Brig. Gen. Ahmad-Reza Radan said Wednesday investigators uncovered no political motive for the attacks, Iranian broadcaster Press TV reported.
Radan said a number of Iranian nationals were arrested in connection with the slaying of the provincial prosecutor. He said there was no connection to terrorism in the attack.
The Sunni Muslim military group Jundallah waged a campaign of terror from the southern province in 2010. Tehran accused the U.S. government of backing the group, though the U.S. State Department listed Jundallah as a terrorist organization that same year.
Radan provided no update on suspects tied to the Rahmatabadi shooting.
