British travel alert remains in place for Cairo area

LONDON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The British government said Friday it was keeping a travel advisory in place for the Cairo area because of the potential for violent political unrest.

"Demonstrations often happen on Fridays but can occur at any time and with little warning," an advisory said. "The atmosphere at demonstrations can change quickly and without warning."

Britain said it was warning against all-but-essential travel to Cairo and surrounding areas.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel warning Wednesday, saying it "strongly advises" against traveling to Egypt "because of the continuing political and social unrest."

The Muslim Brotherhood said in a statement Friday it called for peaceful protests against what it said was a repressive government policy against women.

"During the four months since the beginning of the military coup, Egypt lived through the worst repression and murderous military tyranny in its entire history," the movement said.

The organization said the July 3 ouster of President Mohammed Morsi was illegitimate and he said during his recent murder trial he considers himself to be Egypt's rightful leader.

Morsi was the presidential candidate from the Freedom and Justice Party, the brotherhood's political wing.
