SEOUL, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A South Korean military chief said Wednesday there is a growing sense the regime in Pyongyang is gearing up to provoke its rivals.
Gen. Kwon Oh-sung, the South Korean army chief, said Wednesday the regime in North Korea was trying to take the strategic initiative in the impasse over security on the Korean Peninsula.
"The South Korean Army should prepare for the present danger and also meet various demands," he was quoted by South Korea's Yonhap News Agency as saying.
North Korean experts at Johns Hopkins University in Washington have said in recent reports there were signs the regime was doing more to enhance its missile and nuclear weapons capabilities. Tensions in the region, however, have eased in the wake of a February test of a nuclear device, North Korea's third since 2006.
His comments came as South Korean President Park Geun-hye visited with government officials Wednesday in London.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague lauded the bilateral relationship with Seoul during her arrival.
"This has been clearest in our work in relation to security on the Korean Peninsula," he said in a statement.
