European Union provides another $55 million in aid to Syrians

BRUSSELS, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Another $55 million in European Union aid for people affected by the war in Syria shows Europe is serious about its commitments, an official said Monday.

"We continue to stand by the Syrian people," European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule said. "In our funding we focus on providing education to the children in the region, but we also provide basic services to all those affected by the crisis; both inside Syria and in the neighboring countries."

The $55 million is the latest portion of a $552 million package meant to help Syrians, including refugees from the country's civil war, officials said.

Some of the funding would help Jordan, which the European Commission estimates hosts about 500,000 refugees who fled Syria.

About $6.9 million would help Syrian students continue their education in European universities.

Fule estimated almost half of the Syrian people are in need of some form of humanitarian assistance.

The European Commission said the humanitarian crisis in Syria is one of the gravest "in decades."
