LONDON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The British government, in the wake of the September terrorism attack in Nairobi, said Tuesday it was committed to Kenya's counter-terrorism efforts.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague issued a report to members of Parliament regarding the government's response to bombings and shootings last month at the upscale Westgate shopping mall. He said the immediate response was focused on forensic work at the scene of the carnage.
On the broader security front, Hague said the British government shared a mutual interest with its Kenyan counterparts in combating terrorism.
"In line with the U.K.'s overall approach to addressing terrorism overseas, we are committed to helping Kenya strengthen its capacity to investigate, prosecute and detain terrorists in line with international human rights obligations," he said in a statement. "Our support also extends to helping Kenya strengthen its borders and counter security threats that emanate from across its international borders."
Six British nationals were killed and three others were injured in a September terrorist attack on the shopping center in Nairobi. More than 60 people were killed in the attack by al-Shabaab militants.
